Coir, a natural fibre derived from coconut husks, is known for its durability and eco-friendliness. While often appreciated for its practical qualities, Coir also offers a range of aesthetic opportunities when it comes to its dyed colour. Coir mats are available in a variety of shades, from natural and light browns to darker tones like black and grey, and even a vibrant red, making them a versatile and often overlooked aspect of interior style.

For your entrance area these different colours can be chosen to chime well with existing decor, strike a more adventurous cord in the form of a burst of Unexpected Red, or even start from the ground up by defining the exact tonal accent colour for a refresh of your Porch, Entrance Hallway or Boot Room.

Here’s how to incorporate coir door mats into your home, based on their colour:

The undyed, pale brown of natural coir provides a rustic and homely feel. It is such a ubiquitous colour, a staple of the classic traditional welcome mat recognised the world over! This colour is ideal for creating a warm, inviting atmosphere, blending seamlessly with various décor styles, such as:

Farmhouse: The natural tones complement wooden furniture, exposed beams, and other rustic elements.

Coastal: The pale brown of Undyed Natural Coir Matting creates a relaxed and beachy vibe when paired with light blues, whites, and natural textures like linen.

Bohemian: The organic look works well with layered textiles, eclectic patterns, and indoor plants. (Bonus points if you pair this with an indoor palm!)

Light Brown Coir Door Matting Style Guide

Light brown coir mats offer a soft, neutral base that can be used in many spaces. I always think of this colour as a roasted natural, a step up in richness compared with the natural undyed material. This colour works well in the following schemes:

Minimalist: Provides a subtle warmth without overwhelming, sits well within clean lines and an uncluttered aesthetic due to its texture being balanced with the colour, not overwhelming or being lost in the darker shades.

Scandinavian: This tone brings an element of pine forest nature, pairing well with other woods and muted colours such as deep blues.

Contemporary: The understated hue of Light Brown Coir Matting complements modern furniture and art, adding an element of warmth to sit alongside more contrasted spaces such as contemporary uses of black, white and grey.

Grey Coir Door Matting Style Guide

Grey coir mats provide a sophisticated and modern touch, ideal for a contemporary home. I'll let you into a secret... my own home has this colour Coir Matting. I paired a pastel pink wall with this grey matting on the floor below and a sprinkling of sage green accents (hallway flowers, coloured glass keybowl). I wanted something calming for a first introduction to my home.

Grey Coir should be considered in these schemes:

Industrial: The grey complements concrete, metal accents, and exposed brick walls if looking for something striking and architectural.

Modern: This neutral provides a chic base for colourful furniture and art pieces. Anything that you want to be a focal point will need a solid foundation of tones around it to ensure that the artwork shines brightest in the space.

Transitional: The versatile grey works as a bridge between traditional and modern styles, pairing well with a variety of colours and materials. I'd consider it a great transition for a back door, leaving the home and entering the garden and returning once again.

Dark Brown Coir Door Matting Style Guide

Dark brown coir offers a rich and grounding effect, making it ideal for spaces that need a touch of elegance and depth. For homes that have exposed beams and heirloom furniture, this is the perfect choice of Coir. This colour can be used in:

Traditional: The dark brown complements classic wooden furniture, ornate patterns, and warm colour palettes.

Mid-Century Modern: This hue adds a retro feel to the space, pairing well with vintage pieces, geometric patterns, and pops of colour.

Eclectic: The dark brown acts as a grounding element when combined with bold colours and mixed patterns. Dark brown is the last hue before black and remains a natural presence right up to that point.

Black Coir Door Matting Style Guide

Black coir mats offer a bold and dramatic statement, suitable for contemporary and modern interiors. Black really is a colour that is made for the contemporary and current design scheme. It is also perfect for commercial spaces, shops, offices and galleries. Pair this mat with:

Modern: The starkness of the black contrasts nicely against white walls and minimalist decor. A very Zen choice, especially if you expect people to enter and move through a smaller area porch into a larger hallway.

Art Deco: The bold black paired with black or pearl white is a definite nod toward la touche décorative. Pairing perfectly with metallics, straight line patterns and rich colours like emerald greens or royal blues.

High-Contrast: The mat is great for any bold design environment, high contrast blacks pair well with white or very light colours for visual impact.

Red Coir Door Matting Style Guide

Red coir mats bring a vibrant and energetic feel to any space. I've been fortunate to have designed some great rooms that incorporate a splash of red. This striking colour would be most suitable for:

Eclectic: A red mat is a great way to add a bright pop of colour to a room style that is intentionally punchy and adventurous.

Bohemian: Red adds to the warmth and eclecticism of this style, and contrasts well with natural tones and textures. Has a rich traditional place in Global Bohemian spaces (Moroccan, Indian inspired) and works just as well in both a Maximalist or Vintage Bohemian scheme.

Contemporary: A red mat acts as a fun and bold accent, best placed in rooms with neutral backgrounds. I have a friend with a bright red entrance porch, which leads into a canary yellow hallway - I almost think it is a shame that only a small place has such a powerful colour - but that's part of why red works so well in a concentrated, targeted and purposeful location.

I hope that I've given you a few ideas on what to consider when you're picking out your Coir Door Well Matting.

When deciding on how you're going to make your entrance, there are a few additional design considerations worth focusing on.

Texture: Coir's coarse texture is a key feature, bringing a rustic and natural charm to any space. The unique feel of coir underfoot can add a tactile element to your home. And that texture is a tool that keeps the outside from moving into the home, trapping dirt at the door!

Durability: Coir is a very durable material, making it ideal for high-traffic areas such as hallways, entryways, and kitchens. The tough bristles of coir mats are great for trapping dirt and debris, but they are robust enough to outlast most other Natural Plant Fibres. Once in place, and provided they are well maintained, they can last decades!

Moisture Resistance: Coir is naturally moisture-resistant, it is not waterproof and will need to dry, but that extra reassurance that water is not going to ruin it makes it a great choice for kitchens, boot rooms and entryways of all forms.

Coir door mats offer more than just practicality; they provide a stylish and versatile option for any home. By considering the various colour options and their design implications, you can choose the perfect coir mat to enhance your space and reflect your unique taste. Whether you prefer a natural, understated look or a bold, dramatic statement, coir can be incorporated into any interior design style to bring a blend of nature, functionality, and style to your home.
