Black Sisal Rugs with Contrasting Borders
Small Boucle C Anthracite Sisal Rug with Cotton Oatmeal Border
The first of our Black Sisal collection is this pairing of Small Boucle C in an Anthracite colourway.
The term "boucle" comes from the French word for "loop," and describes the characteristic looped or knotted texture of this classic weave pattern. Anthracite as a material is rich and flecked, paying into a natural aura of intrigue.
Pairing Black Sisal with a contrasting border can create a visually stunning design and this Cotton Oatmeal Border holds the same flecking effect in reverse with slightly darker backing and flecks of white. Cotton Chenille is gorgeously soft as well, which makes this a fantastic pairing for a refined sitting room or stylish office.

Next up for a contrast is a black and brown combination...
Big Boucle Accents Black Sisal Rug with Leather Sand Border
The key to a Brown and Black pairing is always going to lie in finding complementary shades. Here the charcoal black of Big Boucle Accent's is lifted by a Vintage Leather Sand Border. The mixture of textures is a technique that looks fiercely intentional and strong. A rug like this will balance out a light coloured sub-floor such as oak or pine.
Barefoot is the best way to experience Boucle, I always think it is a great pressure massage with every footstep!
Leather will always be the most stylish border option for any rug. It holds a wealth of heritage in its subtle variation. Over time it will even gain a unique patina, making it even more personal.
Patterned Weave Black Sisal Rugs and Runners
Black sisal is available in various weaves, each offering a unique texture and visual appeal.
Oriental Carbon Sisal Rug with Cotton Slate Border
Oriental Carbon features a deep charcoal hue, inspired by ancient volcanic rock, with a striking tiger-eye sisal design that symbolises strength and resilience. I often include a piece of Oriental in my moodboards, because from its Platinum form to this dark Carbon, it is a weave that grabs attention.
The Cotton Herringbone border contrasts well the pattern of the Rug weave. What that amounts to is a distinct and sophisticated look.
This pairing provides a polished look that complements both contemporary and traditional interiors, but particularly well suited to Living Rooms and Dining Rooms.

Ogee Rhythmic Play Sisal Rug with Linen Obsidian Border
Woven from 100% Sisal this combination is a pattern inspired by the ornate, serpentine S-shaped arches, weave matched with an inviting, versatile and hardwearing Linen Twill in a sharp black Border
What I love about this weave is that it pairs the natural tones of Sisal with the Black Sisal accents. That combination makes it a really dynamic choice for a Library or Bedroom. The patterned Black circles are only about an inch in size, so become an intricate lattice pattern.
The best way to break up a pattern is to frame it with a single block of colour. Linen Twill here forms the perfect frame, Obsidian lifts its colouring from the accents in the Rug and manages to hold the pattern within its bounds with ease.

Sisal Rugs with Dark Borders
Natural Rugs with Black borders can be used to accentuate Sisal in various natural shades, creating a cohesive, sleek and stylish look. The darker the colour, the more powerful the effect. Here are two final Rugs that really take the idea of the Black Sisal Rug trend where I think we want to go.
Malawi Rustic Sisal Rug with Cotton Arabica Border
This near black weave is the perfect example of depth and texture. Malawi is as resilient as it is beautiful, making it perfect for busy spaces like hallways and reception rooms. The touch of rustic here makes the material extremely engaging and authentic.
Earlier I mentioned Cotton Chenille's softness and it reappears here in a colour that is the richest almost black/brown that is the height of elegance. In my early career I worked as a merchandiser in a luxury jewellers and brown like this is a classic of design that communicates an effortless prestige.

And for the grand finale...
Grand Oriental Cinder Grey Sisal Rug with Leather Black Border
This pairing draws inspiration from a bespoke client design, combining Grand Oriental Cinder Grey with Vintage Leather Black for a contemporary yet timeless look. The client wanted to redecorate their living room and had already picked out this combo on our Bespoke Rug Designer tool.
They'd selected Grand Oriental Cinder Grey for the intricate earthy tones that elevate it above a simple black, lifting it up to a more mineral black. The goal was contemporary, understated, engaging and I think this fits the bill perfectly.
The Vintage Leather Black Border has a network of natural creases and subtle grain that makes it a really compelling frame.
We're three months down the line since the project finished and the client is still raving about the success of this aesthetic.
